How to Apply


You can receive an application by walk-in, email, or write to the Personnel Department, City of Oak Ridge, Municipal Building, P.O. Box 1, 200 S. Tulane Ave., Oak Ridge, TN  37831-0001, or telephone the office at (865) 425-3564. The Personnel Department email address is:  personnel@cortn.org.   You may also click on the link for a printable version of our application.  (Note:  this version is printable only and a version to submit online is currently under construction.)  Your application will be accepted at any time by mail or during regular office hours, 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.  Resumes may be forwarded to the Personnel Department at the above address.   You need only one application to be considered for all vacant jobs that you qualify for.  You must fill out the application form completely, and all statements on the form are subject to verification.

Residency

You do not have to be a resident of Oak Ridge to file an application. However, some positions require that the successful applicant move into the corporate limits of Oak Ridge. All employees of the City are encouraged to live in Oak Ridge and become involved in the community.

All applicants will be evaluated against the same qualification requirements.

What Happens to Your Application

Applications are kept on file for two (2) calendar years. You may bring your application up to date at any time by contacting the Personnel Department. You must notify the Personnel Department in the event of name change, address and/or telephone number.

The City advertises in The Oak Ridger, The Oak Ridge Observer, the City’s Internet Website (www.cortn.org) and with the Tennessee Career Center. If you have an application on file and wish to be considered for a specific opening, you MUST notify the Personnel Department. Your application will then be placed with the others that have been received and will be reviewed by the appropriate City staff members. Please pay particular attention to the “close date” for any position you are considering as late submissions will not be accepted.

Some individuals are requested to come in for an oral interview and personal references and former employers are contacted. When all data is gathered, the Department Director of the vacant position will recommend the applicant who appears to be best qualified, and an appointment is made by the City Manager. All applicants must be able to pass a complete physical examination and drug/alcohol screening as a condition of employment.

Tests

To qualify for certain jobs such as Public Safety Communications Officer, Police Officer/Police Officer Trainee, and Firefighter/Firefighter Trainee, you must take a written exam. The exams are scheduled by the Personnel Department whenever there are specific recruitments. Police and Fire applicants passing the written exam also undergo physical performance testing and must pass psychological evaluations as a condition of employment.
