cITY cOURT:

City Court has jurisdiction within Oak Ridge over cases involving violations of city ordinances. The courtroom is located in the Municipal Building and the City Court Clerk's Office is adjacent to the courtroom. The City Court Clerk's Office records and maintains permanent records of cases that come before City Court. The City Court Clerk's Office also receive monies for fines and costs. Payment may be made in person or by mail.  Acceptable methods of payment are: cash, check and money orders.  If you have written a bad check to this office in the past, a check will not be accepted.  Credit card payments are not accepted at this time.

At the Judge's discretion, a person may complete a traffic school class to keep a moving traffic violation off of his or her driving record with the State.  To be eligible, a person must not have already taken the traffic class out of this court.  The traffic class is normally scheduled for the first Saturday of each month.  Depending on the severity of the charge, the Judge will assign either the four-hour or eight-hour class.  There is a fee for attending the class, payable directly to the instructor.  Court costs will also be assessed, payable to City Court after completion of the traffic class.  Due to federal rules, a person with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) may not take the traffic class.

Window tint: Fine and costs will be assessed for failure to comply with State and City window tint laws.  If tint is removed (or taken to legal limits), the City Judge may dismiss the citation for a first offense.  The vehicle in question must be driven to the Municipal Building for an officer to determine compliance.  This may be taken care of prior to your court date by going to the City Court Clerk's Office, provided an officer is available with a tint meter to determine compliance.  Window tint laws are applicable to ALL windows on a vehicle.  

Child restraint: This citation cannot be taken care of outside of court.  Attendance in court on your designated court date is required.

Insurance:  You must appear in court on your designated court date for an insurance violation.  Due to changes in the State law, an insurance citation can only be dismissed if you can show proof that insurance was in effect at the time of your citation.  If you had insurance in effect at the time of your citation but did not have proof in your possession at the time, please bring proof of insurance to court.  This can be done prior to your court date by coming to the City Court Clerk's Office.  If you were driving without insurance, State law requires the court to find you guilty of the offense.
